Hello, Doctor. I Am Having A Feeling Of Heavy Mucous

default
Posted on Thu, 20 Jun 2024
Question: Hello, doctor. I am having a feeling of heavy mucous and a lump in my throat. I have seen an ENT and general doctor who see no reason for these symptoms. They are constant and very uncomfortable. The ENT believes it is Global Pharyngeus that he says can be caused by extreme stress and anxiety which makes sense since I am having extreme stress and anxiety. Have u ever heard of these symptoms caused by stress and any idea why it would cause a feeling of mucous and a lump? Also, any suggestions, home remedies, or any med I could get (perscrip or OTC) to relieve this would be very appreciated. Thank u so much.

Dear
Thanks for contacting me with your health concern and after reviewing your health query, I am of the following opinion:

1. Since the ENT examination came normal [who must have given due consideration]: thus he must have excluded causes like malignancy, any muscle spasm, any pharyngeal inflammatory condition, or any associated muscle/joint problems [from the vicinity]

PS. Make sure to check with a Medicine specialist to exclude any Thyroid [goiter] problem or gastroesophageal reflux disease [hiatal hernia]. [Although psychological factors like anxiety/stress, and depression are associated with higher risks of globus sensation [present in your case history].

2. As in your other queries you are also seeking treatment from a Dental doctor, sometimes it can affect the way your tongue touches the back of your throat resulting in chronic inflammation and excess mucus:

PS. hypertrophy of tongue base due to GERD and dental problems [make sure to exclude them too].

3. If all examination comes normal, given the benign nature of the problem: initially one can start with empirical therapy with proton pump inhibitors [but you said that they are not helpful in your other query], so the attending Physician might ask for endoscopy, pH monitoring, manometry and if investigations also come Normal then one might go for CBT [cognitive behavioral therapy] along with antidepressants and/or speech and language therapy.

4. From the Ayurveda perspective I can see that problem is in the Throat [Visshudha ] Chakra, and before further going into the management, start incorporating the following:

- Limit intake of fatty and acidic foods.
- discontinue intake of alcohol and caffeine.
- decrease the size of meals.
- reduce weight [if overweight/obese]
- avoid tight-fitting garments around the abdomen.
* Take 5 gm Terminalia chebula powder [ at bedtime] for 2-3 months [1 hour after dinner].
* Consider oil pulling with sesame/olive oil.

Please revert back with your clarifications.
