Hello Doctor, My Cousin Was Met With A Road Accident

Question : Hello doctor, my cousin was met with a road accident on last Saturday and he has blood cloting in his brain due to head injury. He was admitted in near by hospital. He is ICU from last 5 days. He is not on ventilator. But there is no much improvement in his condition. He is not able to recognize anyone. He is under observation and doctor said we have to wait to see if blood clot can be removed through medication. We are in tension as we didn't see any improvement. Kindly advise what to do in this situation. I have attached the reports.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and I would try my best to help you.

I have noted your cousin's clinical details. Based on this, he has suffered multiple injuries to various parts of the brain. This has led to his inability to recognize people. Recovery would be slow as many parts of brain have received injuries. Surgery is not needed, as there is no area of large bleeding.

After a few days, he would be shifted out of ICU. After that, he would require physiotherapy, speech therapy, etc to recover.

Hi Dr. XXXXXXX Thanks for your quick response. He is still in ICU but has little improvements as per doctor but he didn't start recognizing anybody yet. I have just few more questions. Will he completely recover? How much time it takes usually for complete recovery in such cases? Shall his brain work normally after recovery? Will these injuries effect on his memory? Exact time required for recovery and also the extent of recovery depends on severity of injury as well as the physiotherapy and speech therapy, etc. It varies in different people and usually takes a 3-6 months. Also, recovery is not complete, a few disabilities may remain.

Hi Dr. XXXXXXX thanks for the clarification. Actually, today my cousin's condition got down. He put on evantilator. There was an infection found in his lungs. There is no moment in his body from midnight yesterday. However there was little improvement in his condition yesterday morning. He responded us by face moments to our questions. Please see the latest reports and shed some light on the facts. What is the current condition as per reports? I appreciate your help so far.

There is more brain swelling in the new CT scan.

As per the new CT scan of brain, the edema (swelling) in the brain has increased, which is suggestive of deterioration. However, the exact condition can be determined with the help of clinical neurological examination and MRI brain would give more information, as compared to a CT scan.
