Question : Hello i am a year old women who always had normal Mammograms until last year where i had a 3 mm complex cyst and some microcalcifications with fibro cystisc changes. I have had 2 Diagnostic mammogram every 6 months for a year and just had my Mammogram on 2/17/20. The results read as follows imaging surveillance of a tiny focus of probably benign microcalcifications in association with complicated cyst of left upper inner quadrant. there are no new suspicious on mammography. A 3mm focal asymmetry with numerous round microcalcifications at 11.00 periareolar is not changes on magnification views compared with 2/19. On sonography at 11.00 5mm from the nipple is a parallel , circumscribed 4mm simple cyst with absent vascularity. No solid or suspicious findings seen in the left upper inner periareolar area. Probrably benign findings, Microcalcifications and fibro cystisc changes stable for 1 year. I wanted to ask a breast surgeon or breast oncologist is this something to worry about and could this change into cancer down the road. Any help would be grateful. I am so nervous about this but everything seems to be fine the radiologist told me. Please answer with opions and suggestions

Brief Answer:
Sounds benign

Detailed Answer:
Hi Star,

To me as a surgeon this sounds benign. However, one path to take is to do a biopsy of the calcified area. Has this been considered?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Dr I'm 58 my name is XXXXXXX and I had a hysterectomy at the age of 31 for endometriosis. I was so nervous about this so the radiologist told me that if this was going to wake me up at night and put a halt to my life then she would do a stereotactic bx to ease me.She also said that she does not like to do unnecessary bx and she would see me in a year so I said can it be 6 months she said of course. She also said she feels comfortable with 6 months and for me to go live my life I fine. But I wanted to know does the report sound worried or can these calcifications turn to cancer they are round. Please explained more.Thank you !

Brief Answer:
Does not sound like cancer

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,

Calcifications can be many things, but in the absence of other radiological signs, it is probably fibroadenoma or something similar and benign. So in conclusion, the report is not worrying. I agree that a re-scan in 6-12 months is a good idea.

Hope this helps. Please let me know if you have further questions.
