Brief Answer:
need physical examination...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

It is difficult to predict the cause for sudden reversible pain/swelling and color change of thumb. It could be an inflammatory condition. Can you describe how it started - did it start abruptly or were there any preceeding events like an injury /weather change (exposure)? How severe was the pain and swelling? Did you use any treatment?
Have you had similar episodes?
Do you have any known medical condition?

I will recommend a physical examination if the same repeats again.

Regards
