Question : Hi- I have a question regarding birth control pill called Yaz. I was just prescribed this by my doctor. I struggle with very bad PMS - where I am extremely uncomfortable, bloated, heavy periods and bad mood for 2 weeks prior to my period, followed by a week long period, and it is all very difficult. I cannot deal with the water retnetion, it has me very depressed to be 10 lbs heavier for half of the month and i know it is all my hormones. I am really hoping that this medication will help. Please let me know thoughts, will it help me lose weight? Will it help me with PMS? I don't want to become anxious which is what I keep reading about it. Thanks. It is generic Drosperinone.

Hello,
YAZ tabs are oral contraceptive pills with 3mg drosperinone and 0.02mg ethyl estradiol, which is often given for regularisation of menses and bringing the hormonal imbalances back to balance. But if your concern was only mood swings and PMS symptoms, then yaz may not be the right treatment , infact oral contraceptive pill is not required unless there is irregularity in menses.
You should opt for VITAMIN E capsules and primrose oil capsules 2 weeks prior to onset of menses for 3 cycles and this would help reduce your pms.
But for weight loss per se, you have to be concentrating on few things:_
1. avoid oily , fried, spicy and fast foods.
2. drink 10-12 glasses of water daily for increasing bmr.
3. practice brisk walking x 45 min daily twice a day.
