Question : Hi Doctor,

I had contacted you on 6th April regarding my daughter. I am pasting my earlier question and your reply below:
=========
My daughter is 2.3 years old. She is having runny nose since last Saturday (30th March). We are giving her Alerid syrup 5 ml once a day and we had given this for 5 days and we are giving her Montair LC kid 5 ml once a day for the last 2 days. We are following this treatment as suggested by the doctor last time she had runny nose.
This time we have not visited the doctor yet. Her runny nose is still continuing. She was having fever yesterday which was 100.3 F so we had given her calpol drops 1.9 ml. Apart from this one time, she was not having fever. Her weight is approx 13 Kg.
Please suggest what treatment shall we do now? To summarize we have given her Alerid 5 ml for 5 days and Montair LC kid 5 ml for 2 days. Also, we have Solvin and Maxtra syrup available with us at home in case those can be helpful.
Regards,
Ankur

Brief Answer:
Wait and watch

Thanks for using the Ask a Doctor service.

I have gone carefully through the details and understand your concern. Most often such symptoms are due to viral infections and antibiotics are ineffective in such cases. Usually they take about a week or so to resolve but occasionally they may last a bit longer. Often such viral infections manifest with fever. If your child is otherwise active and playful, I would not be concerned. If not, it would be a good idea to visit a doctor and to get the child evaluated.

As of now continue either Alerid or Montair LC. You need not give both. Solvin and Maxtra are going to do the same thing but I think Montair LC would do a better job. Give Calpol Drops if there is temperature. Also give tepid sponging.

You need to give steam inhalation to your child. It helps in reducing the congestion. Just sit with your child on your lap and place the source of steam before you. The water vapor will be in the air and automatically the child will breathe it in. Water vapor will reach deep inside and would help in diluting the cough and thus would provide relief. Use Nasoclear Saline Nasal Drops in case of nose block.
Nothing else needs to be done. Just wait and watch.
Regards

We had stopped giving her Montair LC three days back as she was improving though she was not completely fine. Now, since yesterday again she is sneezing a lot and a little cough as well. During sneezing, mucus is coming out of nose. Also, she is not eating and mostly we are giving her milk since yesterday. We have come to some place over the weekend where we don't know any pediatrician. Would you be able to suggest some medicine which we can give her. Previously on similar situation our pediatrician had suggested Azee antibiotic. But, I am not sure what shall we do now?
Please suggest. For last 3 days, we have not given her any medicines.

Brief Answer:
Give Montair LC and steam inhalation

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for choosing to ask me once again. I am sorry that I had overlooked your question, thus inadvertently delaying the response.

Just check if the child is active. If she is, you have no reason to worry and Azee is not needed. Continue to give her Montair LC for the duration that she has runny nose. Give her steam inhalation. I do not think that anything else would help.

Hi Doctor,
Thanks for your reply.
I was just worried as we have already given Montair LC for few days. She is active otherwise so, I will follow your advice.
Just 2 things I want to clarify:

1. We are giving Montair LC kid 5 ml once a day. Her weight is approx. 13 KG. Please confirm if the dosage is fine?
2. Is there any upper limit on the number of days we can give Montair LC kid? like 10 days or 15 days?
