Question: Hi Doctor,
My daughter is 1 year 7 months old.
She is having runny nose for past approx. 1 month. In between there was cough as well but, it seems to be ok now.
She is having fever since Thursday (2nd Aug) evening and the fever was going up till 103.4 F, we had taken her to the doctor and he said that it is viral fever and it will take 5 days at least. Today is 5th day. The fever is less now but, it is still there.
We have given her following medicines as prescribed by doctor:
1. Meftal-P 5 ml in case of high fever every 8 hours
2. Calpol drops 1.8 ml 6 hourly in case fever comes back before 8 hours and we had already given Meftal-P within 8 hours
3. Maxtra 2.5 ml 3 times a day for runny nose

Her runny nose is continuing for past 1 month now. Doctor said there is no need of anti biotic as of now. Are the above medicines sufficient as per current situation? Runny nose is a concern for us. Also, now her body seems to be ok but, her forehead seems to be warmer than body. Please suggest.

Brief Answer:
Viral infection, associated with an allergic component.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I have gone carefully through your query. Let me assure you that your child seems to be suffering from a viral infection and your doctor is right about not prescribing any antibiotics. The medicines are proper and sufficient. You need to give steam inhalation to your child. It helps in reducing the congestion. Just sit with your child on your lap and place the source of steam before you. The water vapor will be in the air and automatically the child will breathe it in. Water vapor will reach deep inside and would help in diluting the cough and thus would provide relief. Use Nasoclear Saline Nasal Drops in case of nose block. Hopefully the child will get well in the next few days.

Regarding the runny nose, it is due to an allergic component. If Maxtra does not seem to help, you can move to Syr. Montair LC Kid (prescription medicine) 2.5 ml once daily during such episodes. You can also get a blood allergy profile done and attempt desensitization therapy in case any specific trigger is identified.

Hi Doctor,
Thanks for your reply.

I have just checked her fever and it is 102.9 F.
Today is 5th day and the fever is still very high. Can it still be considered as viral or there can be some other cause considering fever on 5th day is also high? Please suggest.

Brief Answer:
Could be viral. Typhoid or enteric fever is another possibility

Detailed Answer:
In case of a viral fever the fever can be high even on the fifth day. If the fever lasts for more than 7 days, typhoid would need to be ruled out as a possible cause (by getting a blood culture or widal test done).
