                                            Question : Hi Doctor,
My wife was having pain in swallowing 3 days back. She is taking Cetrizine since then, 1 tablet every night. That pain is not there now but, she is having cough now for the last 2 days. Cough has aggravated since yesterday night and she is coughing a lot while sleeping.
She has started taking Benadryl syrup once every night along with Cetrizine.
Please suggest what shall she do to get relief?
Regards,
Ankur

                                    Brief Answer:
Throat lozenges along with cough syrup...
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
It's good to know that throat pain reduced and there is no fever. However I would like to know if she has nasal congestion / blocked nose / runny nose?
And if there is headache? body pain or weakness?
I will also recommend she uses cough lozenges such as TusQ chewable tablets twice or thrice a day along with benadryl syrup for additional benefits. Continue cetrizine tablets.
Awaiting your response...
Regards

                                    Hi Doctor,
Thanks for your reply.
There is no nasal congestion / blocked nose / runny nose. Also, there is no body pain or weakness.
Additionally
1. Due to excessive coughing, she is having throat pain now.
2. Also, due to excessive coughing she is feeling heaviness in head as well along with little headache. It is not normal headache, she is feeling heaviness because of excessive coughing.
Please suggest:
1. Dosage for cetirizine tablet. As of now she is taking one tablet at night.
2. Please suggest dosage for Benadryl. She is taking it once at night.
3. Please suggest dietary precautions in this condition. Any specific food to be avoided or included? Can she take milk and curd?
Also, please let us know if any medicines need to be given apart from Lozenges. Thanks.
Regards,
Ankur

                                    Brief Answer:
Two possibilities...
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Based on your symptoms, there are two possibilities that I can think of:
1. Sinusitis with post nasal drip. 2. Bronchitis - allergic / viral.
As mentioned earlier I will suggest her:
1. Syp Benadryl 1 TSP three times a day.
2. Tab Cetrizine 10mg once at night
3. Lozenges - to suck / chew
4. Steam inhalation.
There are no special diet recommendations. However I will avoid cold and refrigerated food. Fresh fruits and vegetables will benefit her.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you need clarifications.
Regards
