Question: Hi, I am 64 year old woman. I am not drinker nor smoker.
My recent blood test was all good.

As result of stomach discomfort, fulness and pressure on upper part of stomac, at time feeling nauseated. Occasional Bad taste in mouth. I was sent to Have Twice, With 4 years apart, endoscopy. Endoscopy at each time showed that I have gastritis. Was given %E2%80%98somac%E2%80%99 to take in case of discomfort and no other instruction.

Although I try my best to eat healthy, The stomach discomfort has been happening on and off and at times quite strong.

At the moment, for the past 10 days, I am having quite discomfort. I have feeling of gas being stock in my upper stomach, have been constipated. Have Feeling of pressure discomfort in upper stomach.
For the past week , I have been Trying to eat less more often. I am having low acid diet, I drink plenty.and walk, But things are not improving.

Everyone I have consulted so far, they believe I have acid reflux, although I have been very rarely experienced acid or burn.

I was doing a consultation with a specialist from %E2%80%98ask a Doctor%E2%80%99, but somehow after first consultation the The question has been closed. So I am starting again.

Here are my questions:
Today I was reading some articles that suggested maybe problem could be opposite and low acid could also cause the same symptoms. How can know if I have acid reflux or low acid?

What more can I do to ease the build up gas in my upper stomach

The natural remedy has not been working, should I take laxatives? How many days could I take them? Are there any form of laxative which are not addictive?

If it is an indigestion I am experiencing? What would be the best remedy?

My last endoscopy was 2 years ego, is there any need to do another one in case my gastritis turned to ulcer?

Also please advice me of any other tests which could help to clarify the underline problem.

Thank you

Warm regards,
Yasmin

Detailed Answer:

Hi,
Welcome to Ask A Doctor service. Thank you for your query. I understand your concern.
Well from the symptoms you describe looks like it is dyspepsia / or gas trouble in common mans language.
To answer your questions specifically
- unlikely your problem is low acidity related at it usually does not cause symptoms like the way you describe. it usually causes vitamin deficiencies.
- to reduce gas built up can try following things
* regular walk
* disciplined lifestlye, eat on time sleep well and on time. adequate 8 hours sleep will help
* Avoid stress, try to curb anxiety including one for your stomach problem, try to ignore or underplay the symptoms
- most of the times laxative can be avoided by taking plenty of water, regular exercise / jogging. High fiber diet will help. If still constipation persist then lactitol / lactulose based laxative may help in long run without much habit forming potential after consulting your local physician.
- for indigestion avoid junk too, coffee, aerated drinks, also tips above will help in long run.
- unlikely you need another endoscopy unless you have weight loss, pain, vomiting or stool occult blood test positive (can get three samples tested if possible ) Unlikely you have an ulcer.
- other test like blood count, thyroid function test, stool test and ultrasonography of abdomen will help to rule out other causes.
Wish you a speedy recovery. Please do revert for further queries if any.
Happy to help.
