Question : Hi~

I am very ache-y, especially my back. I've had a low-grade fever off-and-on, as high as 102 two days ago but mostly around 100 (my normal temperature is around 96.7). I don't have congestion, though I have started to have a very slight dry cough. I'm a very healthy 51-year-old female.

Brief Answer:
Very likely you are having a self limited respiratory infection, treatment recommended

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome at "Ask a Doctor" service,

I carefully read your query and here is my advice.

The fact that you have some body pains, fever and cough, is a possible indication of a viral upper respiratory infection, which is also called common cold.

The treatment in this case is symptomatic, which means you will have to use pain killers like paracetamol and ibuprofen to help with the pain and also the feverish feeling. You can take paracetamol 500 mg every 6 hours and ibuprofen 600 mg every 6 hours (together with paracetamol) after food to protect your stomach.
Taking enough fluids and eating frequent small amount of food is recommended. You might need to rest as much as possible to help recover quickly.

Normally this is a self-limited infection and you should feel much better within 3-4 days. If you notice that fever is lasting longer than 5 days in total than very likely you will need to see your doctor. Most of the patients recover without a need for other treatments, especially if you do not have other chronic conditions and are healthy, as you already mentioned in your query.

Rarely a viral infection may get complicated with a bacterial infection like pneumonia or tonsillitis which might require antibiotics. This might be considered if you do not improve in the next 3-4 days or your fever lasts longer than a total of 5 days. In this case you will need to see your doctor and have a check.

I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
