Question : Hi, I had a gall bladder and Hernia operation on 26th August and it went fine. After seven days, I suddenly caught a quick cold in the car AC, started coughing and for next 4-5 days had fever going upto 102. I took only regular Paracetamal and the fever came down 5 days back. However, my nose still remain badly congested and two to three times I get a cough which produces thin mucus, But I keep feeling feverish and weak and cannot sit down for eight hours in office(AC room) . Should I consider antibiotics or just wait it out? My age is 68. Male.

Brief Answer:
respiratory infection, needs antibiotics, decongestant, cough formulas.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor services.
I have read your query and here is my advise.

* As per my surgical experience, the underlying cause is respiratory infection
through some sort of bacteria or virus.

* Considering paracetamol as fever control would be symptomatic therapy,
but as there is recent surgery performed, flare up of underlying infection
can pause problems in internal healing status of hernia layers.

My recommendations at present

- Maintain hydration with plenty of liquids.
- If possible, take a leave of a day or two to avoid exposure to air
conditioner, as constant exposure to cold will delay your recovery.
- Avoid exposure to atmospheric pollen or house dust, if required use face
mask wisely.
- Get prescription of antibiotic, anti cold medications with cough formulas as
dextromethorphan or else from your doc.

- Taking boiled water steam inhalation with blanket covered over the head
3 times a day for 5 minutes each help better.
- Tea with cardamom or garlic are natural ways for congestion relief.
- Avoid smoking ( if applicable ).

Wish you great recovery.
Do feel free to discuss further regarding the same.

Thank you.
