Question : Hi I had a mammogram on 2/20/19 and was found to have a 3mm complicated cyst with a group od puncate microcalcifications. I have had mammograms for the last 25 years and all have been normal . I was called back for additional views and a sonogram and this is when they found the cyst. I WAS THEN TOLD TO COME BACK IN 6 MONTHS TO RECHECK. iT WAS A PROBRABLY BENGIN it said with the RADIOLOGY LETTERS BIRDS. iS THIS DAGEROUS OR COULD THIS BE CANCER THEY TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS NOTHING IRREGULAR AND THE CYST WAS OVAL WITH A GROUPED PUNCATE MICROCALCIFICATIONS WHY WOULD THIS HAVE CALCIFICATIONS. THIS WAS IN MY LEFT BREAST. SO IT IS NOW 4/2 AND I FEEL SOME PINCHES IN THAT AREA COMES AND GOES COULD THIS CYST HAVE BURST OR GETTING BIGGER I DONT FEEL ANY LUMPS AT ALL JUST FIBROUS TISSUE. PLEASE LET ME KNOW YOUE THOUGHTS. THX

                                    Brief Answer:
You should be investigated further.
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Punctate microclacifications are usually Benign.Ductal Carcinoma In Situ(DCIS)can also produce these Calcifications.
As the cyst is 3mm,it is not palpable.
I prefer Ultrasound guided FNAC(FINE NEEDLE ASPIRATION CYTOLOGY)for EXACT Diagnosis.Fluid will be aspirated from the Swelling under Ultrasound guidance and sent for Microscopic examination.Nature of the.cells, whether Benign or Cancer can be made out.
Management depends on the Diagnosis
Please consult your doctor and proceed further.
Hope I answered your query. If you have any questions,I will clarify further.
Nothing to worry.
Wish you good health
Regards

I have a follow up in 6 months for another mammogram the radiologist told me on the mammo and us report probable benige findings but to come back in 6 months she said this is not to worry about so you think this is something to worry about would this show up in my blood work? so DCIS shows puncate microcalcifications? Would the radiologist not see if this was a cancer? she has been reading my mammos for the last 15 years.

                                    Brief Answer:
It may be Benign
Detailed Answer:
Hi
As per your Radiologist,it may be Benign. But,the accurate Diagnosis is confirmed by FNAC or Biopsy only
As per.medical.literature,DCIS can produce Calcifications.
Whether it is benign or DCIS, confirmation can be done exactly by Histopathological examination only.
I don't prefer Mammograms regularly to the same.patient due to Radiation effects.
It will not show up in Blood tests.
Hope I answered your question.
Regards
