Essential tremor is strongly linked with genetics but it does not mean all cases have family history of essential tremor. It has been observed that only 50% of individuals with essential tremor have family history and rest 50% have illness without any link to genetics.

So it can be stated that despite being a genetic disorder, the essential tremor is not exclusively genetic disorder and anybody can get it.
