Question : Hi. I have a question about a medication I have been taking occasionally. Is it safe to take 1 mg of Klonopin about once or twice a month? Do I have to worry about any withdrawal symptoms when taking it this way? I only use it when Im having very bad anxiety and have no desire whatsoever to take it more than this. Thanks and have a wonderful day!
Brief Answer:
Once or twice a month is safe
Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using Ask a Doctor. Using Klonopin once or twice a month would be very safe and you wouldn't need to worry about developing a tolerance or experiencing withdrawal using it this way. Typically I would only be worried about withdrawal if you have been taking Klonopin or another benzodiazepine medication daily for at least several weeks, but usually it would take at least several months to build up a significant tolerance.
I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any questions about any of that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.
