Hi. I Have A Swollen Place Next To My Neck

default
Posted on Thu, 18 Oct 2018
Question: Hi. I have a swollen place next to my neck on my left side. Please see attached pictures. It feels soft with a movable small lump in it. Nothing feels really hard. No pain and it just came up yesterday. The only thing I can recall is having a heavy bag on my shoulder yesterday and feeling like it was too heavy but I am not sure it would have caused this. I am a darn worry wart. I am going on a little trip this Wednesday and would like to put off a medical visit until next wk. I have been a little tired. I did have 33 mosquito bites that swelled and itched for over 3 weeks so that wore me out. I got those bites over a 3 week period and I still have some red bumps left. My reaction was horrible to them this year. I had a flu shot last Monday.

Brief Answer:
Most likely to be muscle strain

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to HealthcareMagic and thank you for trusting us with your health concern.

I have reviewed your question thoroughly and seen the attached pictures. I have detailed my opinion below:

There is definite swelling in the area of your trapezius muscle that can be seen in the pictures you have attached. The swelling is likely due to muscle strain and inflammation associated with carrying heavy weight.
The lump you are describing is commonly associated with muscle strain. It occurs due to lactic acid accumulation in strained muscles, commonly known as muscle knot.
The current symptoms you are experiencing is unlikely to be related to mosquito bite or flu shot.

Here are few measures you can follow to reduce swelling and prevent pain.
-You can apply ice to the area of swelling.
- Avoid lifting or carrying heavy weight for a few days. Take adequate rest
-You can also take over the counter Advil (which is an anti-inflammatory) if pain develops. The usual recommended dose of Advil is 400 mg upto 4 times a day as needed.

If you do not notice any reduction in the swelling after a few days, please be advised to follow up with your primary provider to undergo physical examination and detailed evaluation.

Hope I was able to help you
Please let me know if I can assist you further

Thank you for the quick reply. I will follow your advice and if it is not better next week I will see a doctor. It baffled me because it does not hurt. I did put some ice on it today. It would do me good to not worry about lumps and bumps so much :). I love Healthcare Magic. You are always so good at getting back with me.

Brief Answer:
Pain may not always be noticed initially

Detailed Answer:
Hello again Cherie,

You are welcome.

In case of muscle strain, pain may not always be noticed initially. However, repeated strain to the affected muscle can result in development of pain. So please be advised to follow the measures we discussed before.
