Question: Hi, I have akin condition called Icthyosis. For 6 months I've been taking pills (Co-Aleva Tablets) that was described by a doctor and it helped me a lot. However since last month the medicine stopped working on me and now I'm suffering again from itching, dry skin and scaling. Is there any other tablets that can help me? Or should I stop taking medicines for a while?

Brief Answer:
Stop medicin,e exact cause needs to be determined

Detailed Answer:
Hello, thanks for writing here and trusting us.

I am Dr XXXXXXX ,a dermatologist and can understand your concern.

Icthyosis is a general term ,where skin becomes dry with fish like scales.

It can be from birth or acquired in later life.

If acquired in later life ,there are number of causes for icthyosis such as atopic dermatits, thyroid disorder, diabetes, sun exposure etc.

sometimes harsh soaps and some medication also responsible for causing icthyosis.

Ruling out exact cause will help at times to get rid of icthyosis.
Co aliva tablets which you are taking contains betamethasone which is a steroid and it is advised to stop this tablet completely.

For itching you may take tablets such as cetrizine, levocetrizine.

A emollient such as cetaphil moistrizing cream will be useful.Application immediately after bath is more useful .

I hope this will help you.Free feel to ask in case of any concern.

Thanks for replying Dr XXXXXXX
I got Icthyosis 2 years ago when I was using a face product and it irritated my skin so badly.
A doctor gave me Diprofos injection for few months, my skin gets better for few days then it got even worse so I stopped the injection.

I have another question.
Now I'm using Sulfur soap dr wong's, is this soap good? I used Cetaphil before then I changed to QV lotion.

And what is steroid exactly?

Brief Answer:
Stop sulfur soap, cetaphil is a better option

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

thanks for follow up and detailed history.

I will clear all your questions one by one

1.Steroids are basically anti inflammatory drugs .It is mostly used for many skin conditions where it works wonder.

However , it should be always taken under the guidance of a dermatologist who can guide ur doses.

Taking too much of dose and for long time causes sever side effects .

2 Diprofos injection is also a steroid containing injection.
Your doctor might have given you for severe allergy due to face pack you applied.

At present situation ,as per my experience you do not require any steroid

3.Sulfur is good for skin conditions ,however it can cause severe dryness and irritation. This can also lead to peeling of skin.In my opinion it is better to stop sulfur soap.

4.cetaphil cleansing lotion is good face cleanser for skin .You can continue to use it. Even cetaphil soap is also available

I hope this will be helpful for you.

Feel free to ask in case of any concern.Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Probably eczema ,atopic variety or sun allergy

Detailed Answer:
Hello, thanks for follow up.

oozing skin lesions with itching probably indiacte atopic eczema or photo dermatitis.

Uploading images will help in finding out exact diagnosis. You can consult a dermatologist for this purpose.

It will be better to stop sulfur soap and continue with cetaphil.

Levocetrizine tablets will definitely help in reducing itching and also help in decreasing skin irritation. You need to continue these tablets till complete cure.

I hope this will be helpful for you.Take care.
