Hi I Have Been Taking Metoprolol Tartrate For Years. 50
Question: Hi I have been taking metoprolol tartrate for years. 50 mg a day. Prescribed for anxiety not for a heart condition. Recently I was in the hospital because I thought a pill was stuck in my esophagus. During my hospital stay I did not take any more toperol. I have not taken any toperol for a week now. Before the hospital my resting heart rate was about 55. Now it is 90. Just waking slowly will bring it up to 120-130. I was making dinner tonight and it went to 155. A little recent history. I have been having issues swallowing so I have not been eating much more than soft foods and not very much. Like applesauce, potatoes. And since the hospital just broth applesauce and water. I went to my primary care dr yesterday and he started me on Diltiazem calcium channel blocker. 30 mg 2 times a day. His goal is to help relax the esophagus muscle so I can swallow better. My question is will the medication help with the higher heart rate and how high is too high abs I should be concerned.
I have also become very agitated and angry since I’ve stopped the toperol.

Hello
After going through the medical query raised by you I can understand your concern for your health and I would like to tell you that two factors are playing a role in keeping your heart rate high. First is your anxiety and second is the withdrawal effect of Toperol.
Now coming to your question, No, it won’t help much with heart rate because dilzem is a calcium channel blocker with minimal effects on beta receptors of heart. Discuss with your doctor and start with 25mg of toperol back again.
Also it’s advisable that you should personally consult a psychologist for helping with your anxiety issues.
Hope to have been helpful.
Kind Regards
