There are several potential causes for a black patch on the skin, including:

1. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: This occurs after an injury or inflammation to the skin, such as acne, eczema, or an allergic reaction. It can leave behind a dark patch that can take time to fade.

2. Melasma: Melasma is a common condition that causes patches of brown or grayish-brown discoloration on the skin. It often occurs on the face but can also affect other areas like the arms. It is more common in women and can be triggered by hormonal changes, sun exposure, or certain medications.

3. Sun damage: Excessive sun exposure can lead to dark patches or sunspots on the skin, particularly on areas that are frequently exposed to the sun.

4. Fungal infections: Certain fungal infections, such as tinea versicolor, can cause discolored patches on the skin. These patches may be lighter or darker than the surrounding skin.

It's essential to protect your skin from further damage by using sunscreen with a high SPF, avoiding excessive sun exposure, and wearing protective clothing. Additionally, try to refrain from using any harsh or irritating products on the affected area, as they may worsen the condition.
