Hi I Have Had A Sore Left Knee For 50

I have had a sore left knee for 50 years from getting hit in football on the outside front of my shin. It has gradually been getting worse but usually not too bad. I overdid it three days in a row biking about 2 weeks ago and it was quite painful and debilitating. Most of the pain is slightly below the knee on the outside (my doctor thinks it is referred pain) but certain moves hurt in the knee. Walking has always been harder on it than biking. Also the knee had only about 50% flexibility. For 49 years I had a knot behind the knee but last year I massaged it under warm water and it went away. OK HERE IS THE STRANGE THING.. I went kayaking yesterday in a slalom kayak for 2 hours. (seated, knees spread, with much of the push going against foot pegs. When I got out my knee was great - no pain with almost any movement - lots of flexibility - I thought this might help in identifying what the problem is and how I should treat it (besides kayaking :). What do you think? thanks
MRI scan of the knee will help in proper diagnosis.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The soreness in the knee that you have can be due to chondromalacia patellae or osteoarthritis or mild ligament tear or inflammation. An MRI scan of the knee will help in proper diagnosis. Mild exercise can help in improvement but stressful exercise or overdoing it will increase the inflammation and can cause pain and swelling. You can upload your MRI scan report for further discussion. Till then mild pain killers, hot compress and application of local analgesic gel will help.
I hope this answers your query.
