Question : Hi, I recently went to the doctor with a headache, that's on and off. it's in my jaw, temple and back of neck. They took my blood pressure a few times and said that it was high for a 19 year old. They took a urine sample and found blood. I'm worried as I was only born with one kidney. They are doing further testing to see if I have a urine infection. what could this be? thanks.
Brief Answer:
It may be urinary tract infection.
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor " service.
I have read your query and here is my advice.
Headaches in your case are justified by high blood pressure.
In the other hand, kidney dysfunction may result in high blood pressure, infection is one of the conditions that may lead to such dysfunction.
So, since there was blood in your urine, infection is a possibility.
I suggest you to follow up with your Nephrologist and to undergo the necessary tests in short time in order to prevent deterioration.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hi again, I'm currently taking flucloxacillin for the forth time this year for infection in my toe and hand. the last time I took flucloxacillin, there was one time my urine was a brown colour. I read on the packet that you shouldn't take them if you have kidney problems, and since I only have one kidney. I told the doctor this but he didn't seem concerned, and wanted me to keep taking them...could this be a possible cause for blood in urine?

Brief Answer:
Flucloxacillin doesn't cause blood in urine.
Detailed Answer:
Hello again.
Blood in urine is not a common adverse effect of Flucloxacillin use.
Only in cases of high doses there may be renal impairment.
An urinalysis is necessary to evaluate if there is blood in urine or there is a red color that may be linked with certain foods for example.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
