Question : Hi.. I’m 57. My girlfriend is 35. She has a special needs child from a previous relationship. We were wondering if she got pregnant if we can expect a normal and healthy baby? She is very fit at 4’11” and 85 pounds. I’m fit as well. I never had any kids yet and wasn’t sure if my sperm would be good to make a normal and healthy baby. Also, since she already has a special needs child, what are the chances she will have another special needs child?

Thanks

Hello and Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service...
I've gone through your query in details...
I can understand your concern...

Firstly, congratulations to both of you for taking the first step i.e. pre-pregnancy assessment which is really important to pinpoint all these concerns you've asked...

However, please note that she's at a brink of a sensitive age group, i.e. 35, which is the theoretical cut-off limit for routine pregnancy (it's just theoretical, practically women conceive healthily even at the age of 45 also)...

No, the chances of risk won't be calculated like that as it was from her previous relationship (however there's always some chances which can be there)...

So, I'd recommend both of you to meet a Gynecologist/Family planning advisor first...There will be a different set of investigations for both of you after which things can be ascertained to quite an extent regarding conceiving naturally...

For you, the mainstay of investigation includes Blood grouping and antibody screening, HPLC, routine STD screening, urine analysis and sperm analysis...

While for her, they may run much more extensive check-ups i.e. Hemogram with peripheral smear, Blood group and antibody screening, HPLC, routine STD screening, TORCH panel analysis, FBS, PPBS, HbA1C, Thyroid function test, Vit D3 level, Midstream urine analysis, PAP smear and an Ultrasound abdomen as a primary check-up...

So, just simply schedule the visit with the Gynecologist/Family planning advisor at first and proceed accordingly...

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take Care
Kind Regards
