Question : Hi I’m a 43 year old female for the past week or so I have been experiencing a feeling of pressure in my rectum. I have had similar symptoms before around three years ago which seemed to clear on its own after a few weeks. The feeling is very uncomfortable can also feel a rumbling sensation in mybrectum at times. There has been no blood and stool seems to look normal. I have an appointment with Gastro in about three weeks. Just wondering what could cause this sensation. My pcp tried a rectal exam but stopped because she felt the muscles were too tense could this sensation be related to muscle tension

Brief Answer:
Initially try an anti inflammatory with stool softner.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for choosing "Ask a doctor " service my dear patient,
Have seen your details and i appreciate your concerns,
I would like to start my answer with most likely causes a few of them are either fissures or hemorrhoid(internal hemorrhoids never bleed).
Now moving to a serious node it could even be suggestive of problems like proctalgia inflammation of rectal canal or can even be an indicator of serious events like mild diverticulitis or colon polyp etc.
A colonoscopy in proper should be done by gastroenterologist.
However as you said that your GP felt that anorectal muscles are tensed i.e suggestive of inflammation an anti inflammatory should be given for few days like ibugesic with a stool softner laxative like lactulose to give time to your recto anal muscles to relax).
If every thing is fine then colonoscopy should be done by Gastroenterologist.
Hope i was helpful and easy to understand,
Follow ups are welcome,
Regards and thank you.

Brief Answer:
Follow up.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,
As per protocol after a age of 40 colonoscopy should be done after every 5 years to look for cancer etc.So making wild guesses wont help.
Secondly don't use suppository they may increase your inflammation.
Use laxative instead.
Applying things locally may cause further inflammation.
Hope i was helpful,
Thanks!
