Question: Hi, I’ve been displaying symptoms of a UTI for a couple of days, and just started having full pains in my side about an hour ago (on par with how I might feel with flatulence.) I have a doctors appointment scheduled for tomorrow, will I be ok until then? How serious is this?

Brief Answer:
Possibly a more serious infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using 'Ask a Doctor'. If you are having pain on just one side, I would be concerned that this bladder infection has spread to the kidney, which would be a serious infection that would need urgent attention. If you had a fever or any nausea, those could also be signs of this type of infection. While this could just be flatulence, considering all of your symptoms, I think it would safer if you could be seen soon, whether in an ER or urgent care, so that you can confirm whether or not you have this type of infection, and get started on treatment as soon as possible.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any other questions about that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.

Hi, Doctor!

I just had a vowel movement and I’m feeling somewhat better, and have had no nausea or fever. Out of curiousity, how quickly would an infection like this spread? I have only been symptomatic of a UTI for three days, could it pass to my kidneys that quickly?

Brief Answer:
That is reassuring

Detailed Answer:
If you are feeling better after the bowel movement, and there is no fever, that would make a kidney infection less likely, and I think it would probably be safe to monitor it for now until you can get in to see someone during the day. These infections can move quickly, within just a day or two, so it is possible for it to happen, but for now it sounds like it is less likely.

Please let me know if you have any other questions, I'd be glad to help any way I can.
