Question : Hi, My daugter is having black coloured spots on legs. I shown to a skin specialist and he has asked for biopsy. I can send you pics. Please advise what is the problem
Brief Answer:
Yes biopsy is a must
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor service.
I have reviewed the query, seen the pics and here is my advice.
From looking at the pics, no single diagnosis can be concluded. It could be as simple as a nevus or it could be lichen or psoriasis or something else. In such a case we need to see the tissue under microscope to check for cell morphology that points to a diagnosis. Biopsy will provide definitive diagnosis. Only then we can decide whether treatment is needed and what type of treatment is required.
Biopsy is in best interest of the child.
Hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

I have biopsy reports. I do not know technical lanhguage but doctor says report is not conclusive so difficult to make any comment and asked me to go back to my skin specialist.
Can you please guide what to do?
Can you please guide what to do?
Brief Answer:
In that case biopsy needs to be repeated
Detailed Answer:
Hi again
Biopsy is the only method to confirm diagnosis. Any other test will not be helpful.
In case of inconclusive biopsies, biopsy is usually repeated with a wider specimen if possible. I will prefer doing biopsy in a medical college with a fully functioning pathology department. A well-trained surgeon at that medical college should be able to tell the type of biopsy needed next.
