Question: Hi can you help me identify possible illnesses based on symptoms? I have swollen lymph nodes on neck, behind ears and on collar bones. Can you think of possible illnesses this could signify? I know HIV is a possibility but I'm trying to find out how likely this is and what else this could be. Thank you

Brief Answer:
You can consult the physician for further work-up.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX stacko,

Welcome to Ask a Specialist Service.

The swollen lymph nodes on the neck, behind the ears and on collar bones can occur due to many causes including HIV but to confirm the cause you have to consult your physician because enlarges lymph nodes can be due to tuberculosis or other viral and bacterial infections.

Further, you have to tell me in detail about your exposure so that I can guide you whether you are at risk of HIV or not so just calm down, don't take stress and get back to me with details.

Thank You

Thank you very much for your reply, doctor

I was negatively tested for HIV in January and since then I only had 1 unprotected sexual intercourse with a woman from a low-risk country (United Kingdom). This was 3 weeks ago. This is the cause of my concern. I don't have any other symptoms (no fever, rash, muscle or joint pain, cough etc.)

Brief Answer:
Get tested after 6 weeks of exposure.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX stacko,

Welcome back and thanks for follow-up.

You had unprotected sexual intercourse with a woman of unknown status then the risk is as such very less and you don't have any specific symptoms of HIV also so be relaxed, forget the episode and live your life normally.

As your friend I would suggest to stay away from such unsafe practices to prevent future risk of HIV or other STDs. You can confirm your status by testing after 6 weeks of exposure to get highly reliable and accuarte result. For any further query feel free to ask me again any time.

Thank You
