Hi, Doctor. I Had An Extraction Where A Bone Graft
Question: Hi, doctor. I had an extraction where a bone graft was done for a possible future implant. I am on the fence about getting an implant. Two questions - if I don't get the implant, was the bone graft totally unnecessary? Also, does the bone graft disintegrate over time or stays as it is now since the extraction site hurts to put pressure on it. It was done approx. 3 months ago.

Hiii , first of all thank you for approaching us with your direct query. I read through your query. I must say that bone graft will be usually placed if you need bone support for an implant (because implant requires bone around it). If you were going for bridge prosthesis(taking support of nearby natural tooth) bone graft is not needed as we are not placing implant.And regarding disintegration of the bone graft. The answer is yes. Bone grafts can disintegrate if it is kept simply just like that without any implant placement . If implants are placed then the disintegration will be reduced slowly and over a period of time it wont disintegrate. But if it left free for long time without anything in it , bone may disintegrate. The pain on the grafted site on pressure can be normal as it will be in its healing phase. It takes almost 3-6 months for complete healing of bone. If you have still doubt we may have to take an xray or scan to check the bone healing.So dont stress much over it thinking keep cool and calm mind. Thank u, doctor. Approx how long do I have before extraction site closes up? Also, there are some bumps that have formed in the healing process that hurt a bit and the periodontist said he will remove when gum is more matured in about a month from now. This should flatten the extraction site out a bit which I feel will make it better for any option chosen - either an implant, a flipper tooth or possibly an extended temporary crown off adjacent tooth. Just wanted to ask if u agree with having these lumps removed.

Otherwise better to go for fixed partial denture taking support of the adjacent teeth. Flipper tooth will be my last option as it is difficult to remove it daily and clean it and again keep in mouth and also it can cause more bone loss. Hope your question was answered convincingly.
