Question : Hi healthcaremagic.

Situation: I joined for one month to try to help a friend who has had an excess phlem and spitting problem for over 2 years. I am currently communicating with Dr. Saha. We have exchanged comments for a few days now. The doctor suggests that my friend's problem is psychological. That is possible, but after getting to know my new friend, I believe that his problem is physical. My friend takes gabapentin right now and is willing to look at other possibilities. Dr. Saha could be right, that my friend's problem is psychological, but with no disrespect for Dr. Saha, is it possible, in using the HCM system that I can talk to other professionals, too?

I had never before met a person with a spitting problem like the one my friend says he has had for 2 years. We have used HCM (healthcaremagic) to try to find something for him. He is staying in assisted living for people needing help, but my feeling is that they really don't care about the people there. They feed them little, and, in my opinion, the food is not very healthy or satisfying.

I see my male friend as mentally capable and communicative. I would like to help him find a way to stop the development of excess phlem and consequent frequent spitting he is experiencing. He is very frustrated with it. He says that if he swallows his spit, it makes his stomach upset.

Can I try other professionals in the HCM system?

Brief Answer:
Sialorhea

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your friend seems to have sialorhea. It means excessive drooling and could have many possible causes including poor muscle control of face muscles. This could be a manifestation of Parkinsonism or stroke or some other condition affecting brain.

Other possible causes could include dental problem so that the mouth does not close completely, candida or some other infection of throat that if ingested causes irritation in stomach, some problem of salivary glands, side effects of some medicine etc.

All this needs proper evaluation by an ENT specialist and neurologist to begin with. An orthodontist and surgeons opinion also needs to be sought.
Further treatment depends on the cause.
In HCM you have option to post direct query to specialist of your choice. You can also post Ask A Specialist query for the above specialists.

Hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
