Hi XXXXXXX
Welcome to 'Ask a Doctor' service.
Neck pain with limitation of movement generally is muscular in nature.
In this case, Acetaminophen (Tylenol) 500 mg every 6 hours might be helpful. Local warm compresses help muscles relax and might help you feel better.
There are other causes of neck pain as well...
To be able to rule these out some more information is needed:
- Your age, please(it's important to know)?
- Since when did you have the pain?
- How strong is it on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the highest)?
- Which part of the neck exactly is it?
- Does it spread somewhere?
- Anything making it worse or better?
- Any lump or redness or swelling in the neck?
- Do you attribute the pain to certain trauma, certain movement or any other event?
- Any other symptoms like chest pain, numbness in the arms or hands, headache, etc?
Please let me know about the above information so I can address your concern more precisely.
Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
If you have only the neck pain that gets worse on movement and you have no other symptoms (mentioned above) then very likely this is a muscular pain and taking paracetamol and ibuprofen as explained above is advisable. Physiotherapy might help relieve the pain quicker and make you feel better.
If you have any of the symptoms mentioned above or the pain does not get better in 3-4 days with the treatment or is any worse you will need to see the doctor.
I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj
