Question : Hi there, I am on oral contraceptives for my birth control. I am a female 24 years of age but I recently started the ketogenic diet and my period the last two months have been irregular. Is my contraceptive still effective?

I have gone through your query and here is my opinion.

A ketogenic diet is a high fat and low carb diet adopted for weight loss.
Stressors like significant and sudden weight loss,anxiety and exercise alters the hormonal levels of body.
Due to fall in hormonal (specially estrogen) levels,there are irregular or at times,scanty periods.
You need not worry about the effectiveness of OC Pills.
Rather they are use to regulate the irregular and heavy periods and even help to reduce the menstrual cramps.
They do so by regulating the body hormonal levels.
If you maintain a good compliance,your contraception would be effectively taken care of.

Thanks for your response! So just to be clear even though my period is not lining up with the sugar pills in my birth control pack the birth control is still effective? My cycle has been off for the past 2 months but I still take the oral contraceptive consistently.

Yes....they are.
Even if you have been off the cycles or your withdrawal bleed cycles don't coincide with the sugar pills,you are protected.
This applies till you don't default.
