How Accurate Is The NAAT Test In Detecting Infection?

default
Posted on Thu, 10 Nov 2016
Question: hi.. I am a male (40) If I had an Aptima Combo (NAAT) test (from urine) with only 30 minutes between my last urination/void, will that give a false negative? My understanding is that these tests are very sensitive and it really would not matter.... Also, I re-tested 9 days later... two days after completing a week of Doxy... that test was negative also... Is that test invalid as well due to the Doxy, or would Gon/Chlam still be detectable due to the dead DNA?
I was diagnosed with Epidytimitis 6 weeks ago and may have had an exposure 8-9 days before that pain began... Didn't know if that was too quick as well for that type of inflammation from Chlamydia or Gonorrhea...

Brief Answer:
very accurate test

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The NAAT tests detect the genetic material of the bacteria causing infection. The sensitivity of these tests, as you mentioned, is very high. Medical studies have indicated that it is over 95%.
At the moment is the most reliable test for this infection

When a test is highly sensitive, this means that there is very little chance of a false negative.

The fact that you urinated prior to the test would not affect its accuracy. The test would have been able to pick up an bacteria genetic information if it was available.

Retesting is normally done a month after treatment but this is to reduce the chance of a false positive result. Since your result is negative, this may not matter.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

Thank you for the clarification... I was diagnosed with Epidytimitis 8 weeks ago and may have had an exposure 8-9 days before that pain began...As i learned my wife was unfaithful... Putting aside the NAAT test..... I Didn't know if that was too quick as well for that type of inflammation from Chlamydia or Gonorrhea... Would it be possible to develop this condition that quickly?

Brief Answer:
it is enough time

Detailed Answer:
HI

The incubation period is the time from exposure to an infectious agent (in this case chlamydia, gonorrhea) to symptoms.

The incubation period of chlamydia can vary from a few days (1 to 5) up to weeks (3 weeks). Some have no symptoms at all. This means if you were potentially exposed 8 days before your symptoms, this is still enough time for them to develop.
The incubation period of gonorrhea can range from 2 to 7 days in most cases

Please feel free to ask anything else

Thank you again. My last question references oral chlamydia or possibly gonorrhea. I am concerned that during this time period of several weeks, I've had dealings with throat soreness and tonsillitis on and off after exposure to my wife both giving and receiving oral sex. In your opinion, is chlamydia of the oral cavity 1) a viable possibility ? 2) likely?

Brief Answer:
It is a rare possibility

Detailed Answer:
hi

Oral sex is a means of transmission of chlamydia but in most persons there are no symptoms.
There are swabs that can be used to detect these infections.

Most throat symptoms, however, are due to viral or bacterial infection or post nasal drip.
