Brief Answer:
Possible adverse effect of valproate.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
A decline in the cognitive function, mainly the memory is a possible adverse effect of the prolonged use of antiepileptics such as valproate.
In such cases, lowering the dose if possible should be considered.
Also, switching to another antiseizure drug with fewer adverse effects such as Levetiracetam for example, is another possibility.
Discuss with your Neurologist these issues.

Hi there,
My GP has suggested me to take an increased dosage of Epilim, I am getting recurring petit mal seizures even with a daily 1200mg dosage of sodium valproate. Is it best for me to take an increased dosage with a different medicine?

Brief Answer:
I think another AED should be tried.
Detailed Answer:
Hello again.
If you increase the dose of Epilim is possible for the memory problems to get worse.
In my opinion, switching gradually to another AED (antiepileptic drug), levetiracetam, for example, should be considered.
However, this should be discussed with your Neurologist, he can decide what's best in your case.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
