Posted on Fri, 28 Jul 2023
Question: I have low iron, and low blood pressure. I often can not give blood because of this. I take an iron pill each day as well as many other vitamins. I play tennis, pickleball and walk a lot and am very active. I am a female and 55 years young. Often I have to sit and rest between sets. My legs feel very heavy while playing. How can I get more energy and could there be something wrong with my heart or something else?

Brief Answer:
I would recommend as follows:

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Regarding your concern, I would explain that your symptoms could be related to anemia.

Iron supplements for at least three months are necessary to improve your situation. A periodical checkup of complete blood count and iron levels every 3 months is necessary.

But, a cardiac issue or any other metabolic disorders can not be excluded either.

Coming to this point, I would recommend consulting with your attending physician and performing some tests:

- a chest X-ray study and pulmonary function tests
- a resting ECG and cardiac ultrasound to examine your heart
- thyroid hormone levels for thyroid dysfunction
- kidney and liver function tests
- blood electrolytes
- fasting glucose.

You should discuss with your doctor on the above tests.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

How concerning are these symptoms? Could it be nothing? My deductible is $1500 so it will cost a lot for these tests to be done. I know better safe than sorry but what do you think it really is?

Brief Answer:
My opinion as follows:

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Your symptoms are not really concerning.

Considering your insurance problems, I would recommend taking iron supplements with vitamins and folic acid and periodically check your complete blood count every month.

If your symptoms do not improve with the improvement of anemia, and/or you have other symptoms like dizziness, persistent shortness of breath triggered by physical activity, leg swelling, etc. I would recommend performing the other above mentioned tests.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!
