Brief Answer:
Tinnitus, different possible causes

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Ringing in the ears is called tinnitus, there are different possible causes.

Some of the more common causes are-
(1) hearing loss itself can be associated with tinnitus either age-related hearing loss or hearing loss caused by noise
(2) excess wax
(3) ear infection
(4) congestion eg in sinusitis
(5) trauma
(6) a side effect of medication eg NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen etc), some antibiotics, diuretics used for heart failure or high blood pressure
(7) mass affecting the ear.

It can also occur in persons with thyroid disease, high blood pressure, anemia, high cholesterol, Meniere's disease

It would be best to see an ENT doctor for an assessment. He or she would be able to examine and see if the cause can be found, in some persons the exact cause is not found.

Hope I have answered your query.
