How Can Hematuria Be Treated?

default
Posted on Sat, 6 May 2017
Question: Hello, I have a question regarding sudden hematuria. I am a 48 year old male with no significant medical history other than being diagnosed with benign hypertension and metabolic syndrome. My only medications are lisinopril and indomethacin as necessary.

Roughly five or six days ago I came down with what I thought it was just a case of a cold and congestion. I did over the counter treatment. Not having any success with the treatment I decided to schedule a appointment and an urgent care clinic. However, the day before I went to the clinic I suddenly had one episode of significant burning upon urination but without any indications of blood present. Then the next time following that a fairly decent amount of blood was noted in the urine. Prior to that episodes I had been well hydrated and the urine was essentially clear.

Subsequently the amount of visible blood has decreased significantly however, even to this point, several days on, I still notice very spotty blood patterns on the inside of my underwear. And while a burning sensation is significantly less, and not always present, occasionally there is a small lingering burn.

I've scheduled an appointment for a urologist but this is not until several weeks down the road. I am currently taking Cipro on the recommendation from an urgent care physician. This however does not seem to have changed anything. The Regiment of treatment is one tablet twice a day for 5 days. The urinalysis show positive for red blood cells and white blood cells in the urine. Urine culture results are still pending.

After having done a fair amount of reading I have some lingering concerns about what's going on. Are these concerns Justified or not? Any encouraging words would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Brief Answer:
The cause of Hematuria needs to be investigated

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for query .

Based on the facts that you have posted hematuria that you have is mostly due to one of the following three common factors and needs to be investigated
1) UTI mostly infection of bladder (Cystitis).
2) Mass in the either Kidney or bladder
3) Stone in kidney .

However precise diagnosis can be confirmed only on clinical assessment and following investigations by a qualified Urologist
1) Urine routine and culture
2) Ultrasound Scanning of abdomen and pelvis
3) Blood coagulation profile
4) C.T Scan of abdomen (Plain and with I V contrast )
5) Endoscopic examination of bladder (Cystoscopy)

Since you have an appointment with Urologist in May, try to get first three preliminary investigation as a out patent procedures .That will help you to give guide lines and provisional diagnosis .

Till then continue taking Ciprofloxacin along with Nitrofurantoin twice daily for 5 more days .

Ensure to drink more water ,This will help to reduce dysuria .

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions ,I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.
