Posted on Tue, 26 Apr 2022
Question: I fell 5 days ago and still have mild pain in my upper left ribs. It’s only when I bend back or take a very deep breath. Should I worry about my spleen?

Brief Answer:
Tylenol, Rest, Ice Compression, Observe.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Well, from your description it seems like a muscle strain/mild injury (secondary to the fall).

Since there are no other symptoms, and it's been 5 days already, I wouldn't be worried regarding any internal organ injury (spleen as you may suspect).

The fact that you're feeling them while taking a deep breath or during bending is moreover pointing towards the musculoskeletal injury also.

At this outset, I'd recommend taking Acetaminophen (eg. Tylenol) up to thrice daily for next few days, put some ice compression over the affected area and don't engage into any kind of strenuous activities...avoid any forceful coughing/straining (activities which cause further stress) for the time being.

Just observe how you stay after this.

Let me know if I can assist you further. Take Care.

I am not having abdominal pain and my appetite is not affected.
Thank you. Does the possibility of internal injury decrease as more time goes by?

Brief Answer:
It does, in most of the cases

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Yes, it does, in most of the cases (apart from some exception like blood vessels/vascular injuries and injuries to organs with high blood supply like kidney/liver etc.). In your case, it doesn't seem to be so...

So please don't worry, just follow the advice earlier, let me know how you stay afterward.

Take Care
