How Can One Have Recurring Flashback Moments In Life?

default
Posted on Thu, 29 Sep 2016
Question: Hi, I lived something in my life that I don't really understand and I'm just looking for answers from someone who know what he's talking about. I lived a flashback moment when I was about 35. I had a flashback of my 3-4 year old self. I would like an explanation to "how this process takes place in the brain" because during the flashback, I was able to control it, and I knew I was at home (35 yo) in my bed at the same time. To make this more clear, when the flashback began, it was like, I was re-living the exact moment and I was so impressed by this new thing that was happening to me. I was able to look around my room and thinking in my (35 year old mind) how cool this was... So basically, I want to also know, are flashbacks suppose to be only a one way connection, like a playback of an event? And how is it possible to interact with it? I hope I'm being clear enough. Thank you. XXXXX.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

This is a normal human experience. Sometimes we have very vivid memories. This has to do with activation of memory centers in the brain and is totally normal. This is more likely to occur around times of falling asleep or waking up, sometimes termed lucid dreaming. You can interact with memories sometimes. This is nothing to be concerned about.

Your answer is pretty vague. I understand what you are saying but I still don't understand how I can be at two different place and time and have the ability to know that what I'm seeing is a memory. But you still don't explain the process that is involved in this situation. Like what kind of chemical reaction that occurs in the brain/mind... How can I be at two events at the same time and know that I'm living both moments at the same time and that I can take over that event and kind of play with it. I think this is a question that I will never have a definitive answer. 25$ down the drain. But thanks for your answer. I have lived other moments that I cannot describe like power outage that happens before it does and more strange things like this... Thanks, XXXXX.

Detailed Answer:
It seems you are asking me how memories work. The answer is no one yet knows. We have no idea how the brain's neural networks interact to produce memories or dreams. However, we do know that it is a common experience to lucid dream, to feel like you are in two places at once, that this is a common human experience and there is nothing to worry about here.
