How Can Reducing Sore Throat, Intermittent Fever And Fatigue By Treated?

Posted on Tue, 10 Oct 2023
Question: Hello, I am a healthy 41 year old. Three days ago I woke up with a sore throat. Two days later it was not quite as sore through the day and today it does not hurt much when I swallow but it does hurt when I yawn. The first two days I had a pounding headache which is gone now. The last two days I have had a lot of fatigue, a slight fever on and off, and an upset stomach. Today my stomach is feeling very nauseous.
I had strep throat which was treated back in November and again in February. My throat hurt much worse and my stomach was very nauseous those two times.

I am not sure if I need to see the doctor. My throat does not hurt nearly as much as it does when I have strep throat, but since I do not have any symptoms of a cold and my stomach feels so upset, I am not sure if this could be strep again.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

In most cases of viral infection of the throat, there are additional cough and cold symptoms , so it is understandable to be unsure.

However, strep throat is usually severe and requires antibiotics to resolve, the fact that the pain is not as severe as your strep throat episodes and also improving without the use of antibiotics, makes strep/bacterial infection, less likely.

Viral or bacterial infections can be associated with nausea and other systemic symptoms. Nausea can also sometimes be a reflection of discomfort/pain level.

Pepto bismol or dramamine may help with the nausea.

For now, you can monitor the throat since it is improving. Use pain medication as needed.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

Thank you very much. I guess it is the nausea that was concerning me the most. If my symptoms persist, how many days should I wait to see a doctor?
Thank you

Brief Answer:
can wait another 2 days

Detailed Answer:
HI

You can wait another 2 days, a viral sore throat would have normally mostly resolved by that stage, so if you are still have significant symptoms, then you should be seen.

If for some reason, there is any worsening, then you can be seen prior to that
