Question: My baby was born 35.5 weeks and now he is 6 weeks old. He is on BF and formula fed. He passes lot of gas and struggles to pass gas sonetimes. Please help and advise.

From yesterday he is vomiting milk and not consuming milk properly. We had cockroach control treatment at home yesterday. We were out for few hours after treatment and came back to house. Is that got to do something with vomiting milk.

Brief Answer:
Try proper burping first

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns.

Let me first ask whether the baby is exclusively breast fed or whether formula feeds are being given. Babies often get colics especially when on formula feeds. In such a case switching back to breast milk should provide relief. You should burp the baby for at least 15-20 mins after each feed. All you need to do is to hold the baby head end elevated for this duration. The extra air taken causes distention and hence may make the child throw up. Proper burping will ensure its escape and the milk will not regurgitate back from the stomach to the food pipe, thus providing relief. You can otherwise give Coliaid when needed. However, if the activity level of the child does not seem normal please visit a doctor without delay.

For a baby of this age, it is normal to pass stool several times a day or even after each feed. Alternatively the child may pass stool once in 10 days and that is normal too. Unless the stool is hard and pellet like, you need not grow concerned. It is also normal to pass green stool or a combination of yellow stool. The green colour occurs due to rapid transit through large intestine where the bile pigments do not get adequate time to convert to the yellow colour of stool. It is also normal to pass green stool or a combination of yellow stool. It is OK for some mucus to be there in the stool.

Let me know if I could help further.

Brief Answer:
Proper burping is possibly lacking.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. The first paragraph of the second question was intended to answer your second question. The vomiting could be due to regurgitation of feeds and burping should provide relief. If if does not, the frequency needs to be communicated. The fluid intake needs to be increased and that should be only in the form of increased breast feeding. It would be advisable to hold formula milk for now. If it still does not help, antiemetics like Domstal (domperidone) Suspension need to be given 0.3 ml thrice daily before feeds till it regularizes. The urine frequency needs to be monitored. If the activity level seems down, you need to visit a doctor.

Hopefully that clears your doubts. Feel free to write back.

Does cockroach treatment( fumigation) effects baby?

Brief Answer:
Not directly likely

Detailed Answer:
Fumigation should not directly affect babies but indirectly can affect all humans. The surface are per volume for babies is more in babies than in adults, and hence the exposure in babies is more. However, vomiting due to fumigation is unlikely. Rather, something being ingested, or contaminated hands (and the contaminants being orally ingested) can be a more important cause for vomiting in children.
