How Can Scar Tissue And Severe Pain In The Buttock Area Be Managed?

default
Posted on Mon, 10 Jan 2022
Question: My husband had IMRT therapy for prostate cancer in 2006. Later he developed scar tissue in the buttock area and severe pain in the buttock area. He has been to many doctors and they can not find the scar tissue nor can they relieve the pain. He is now under the care of a pain management Dr. and that is not taking the pain away. Who else do we see and what else can be done to fix or moderate the pain? Thank you

Brief Answer:
The responsible nerve should be identified first.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

First of all, it is necessary to find the nerve(s) responsible for the pain in the given area.

Nerves that arise from sacrum may be the culprit.

MRI of the sacrum and lumbar spine is necessary for this purpose.

Also, a neurological examination and evaluation by a Neurologist/Neurosurgeon/Spine Specialist is necessary for further management.

After identifying the responsible nerve(s), (the Sciatic nerve is a big nerve while the culprit could be some of its branches) the management may be done by a blocking of the nerve with injections, nerve ablation with radiofrequency, etc.

Also, spinal pump that delivers painkillers in continuous fashion may be used in this scenario.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Take care.
