Question : I have severe discomfort in my right buttock after I have been sitting for 10-15 min. The pain slowly radiates down my leg, and often my middle toes go numb if I sit for longer periods. I am fine while standing with no pain whatsoever. What could cause this, and what kind of relief do I need?

Brief Answer:
may be sciatica

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

The pain sounds like sciatica.

There is a nerve in the lower aspect of the body called the sciatic nerve, it is one of the largest in the body and it originates from nerves that pass through the lower vertebra (bones in the back).

Sciatica refers to irritation, inflammation or injury to this nerve.

It can be temporary or permanent and it is associated with the symptoms mentioned.

Some of the causes of sciatica are:
(1) Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the space between the bones in the back)
(2) Arthritis of the back
(3) Spondylolisthesis - one of the vertebra moves forward or backward in comparison to the other

Diagnosis would require imaging of the back by x ray or CT or MRI

Treatment would be somewhat dependent on the cause but may involve- stretching and strengthening exercises, warm therapy, medication, weight loss of any excess weight.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions.

Brief Answer:
can see your family doctor initially

Detailed Answer:
HI

Your family physician can initially see and assess you

He or she would be able to do the initial investigations for you and provide you with medications to help.
May also be able to refer you to physio so that you can be shown exercises.
