default
Posted on Mon, 18 Sep 2017
Question: Hi Doc,

My daughter just completed 1 year. Since yesterday she is having loose motion. Since 3-4 days she started lickiing her finger as well as foreign objects.
We had given her Enterogermina oral suspension since yesterday night. But today she had loose motion 7-8 times so far. Also she has developed rash reddish mark near her poo point.

Attached is the recent image of the Poo. Plz suggest medicines for loose motion as well as for the rash. She is having pain on the rash area too.

Regards,

Brief Answer:
ORS is the mainstay of treatment

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. Your child is suffering from diarrhea. As you have rightly identified, it is due to pica and improper hand hygiene.

The mainstay of treatment is ORS (oral rehydration solution). Unless the lost salts and fluids are replenished the child would become dehydrated. The urine output needs to be monitored. If the frequency comes down it indicates dehydration and calls for additional supplementation of fluids. But if the child becomes lethargic you would need to take the child to a hospital without delay. The cause is self-limiting and does not need to be treated with antibiotics unless the stool is blood stained.

Give zinc supplements like Zinconia Syr 5 ml once daily for the next 10 days. You need not worry. It should gradually return back to normal. Also give curd or yogurt since it contains plenty of beneficial bacteria and should help. Alternatively you can give some probiotics like Enterogermina.

The loose stools may persist for 2-4 days before it resolves. Rashes can be due to allergic cause. A viral cause is also possible. I would insist you to upload an image of the same. Based on it I would guide you further. Also let me know if there is a fever associated. You need to give some antiallergic like cetirizine once daily for the next few days if there is itchiness associated. You may also apply some emollient like calamine lotion or moisturizer like aloe vera lotion. Please be patient. Feel free to write back.

Regards
