Question: I have been relaxing all day and suddenly developed a sharp pain in my big toe on my right hand side. There is no obvious injury to the toe it is not red or swollen and nothing is growing on it. However the pain is a burning type pain. I have type 2 diabetes and hip arthritis. Brief Answer:
Neurogenic or Paronychia

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query, albeit short and specific.
Noted the history in full including the Medical history, Current medications and the present problem.
Since there is no swelling, redness, trauma and the pain is of burning type the most probable causes can be as follows:
Neurological due to involvement of the nerve supplying the big toe.
Inflammation may show up later as there can be a Paronychia and the signs can take some time to develop.
I would advise you the following:
Keep under observation and consult your Doctor if there is no relief.
Press on the tip of the nail and on its surface to see if there is increase in pain, if it is so, then Paronychia may be the cause and then you may need an antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory with painkiller property.
