Brief Answer:

Can be arthritis or infection.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Sudden swelling and pain of the foot and ankle without any history f injury can be due to arthritis or an infection in the area. You can keep the leg elevated on two pillows, do a hot compress and have mild pain killers and see if it helps.

In case the pain and swelling are persistent then do consult your physician for a direct examination.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
