Question : My wife and I had sex during her ovulation. She took I-pill within the next 10 hour after the intercourse. Given that she was ovulating the day we had sex, will I-Pill still work?

Brief Answer:
Mostly works.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for posting your query.

I-pill can work in one of the three ways:

---it can stop the egg from being released or it can delay the release of the egg

-- it can make the cervical mucus unfriendly for the sperm to ascend

---it can make the uterine lining unfavorable for deposition of the fertilized egg.

The effectiveness of the pill is almost 95% when taken so soon after an intercourse. Thus she is amply protected even though she was ovulating at that time.

You may expect some withdrawal bleed for a couple of days as the pill contains high dose of hormone. Also, her next normal period may get delayed by a week or two and further help should be taken from a specialist in person if she does not see her next normal period even ten days after it is due.

Hope your query has been answered. Please feel free to contact for further clarifications. I will be happy to help.

regards,
Shanti.V.
