How Does A Ureteral Stent Help When Suffering From Kidney Stone?

You were very helpful a couple of weeks ago. Do I need to resend that information? I will go ahead and ask my question now regarding the ureteral stent we have been discussing. During my last procedure (2 weeks ago), by first stent was removed. The Dr. apparently could not get the instrument up into the ureter. So he took 3 biopsies (ureter and kidney) to rule out carcinoma. The pathology came back later as negative for cancer. He did nothing further at that time in case
"the kidney needed to be removed anyway." He then put in a new stent. My original ultrasound showed a mid-uretral stone (.7 mm). Can that stone stay in that position as a stent is placed? My Dr. is well respected and I trust in him. I can't talk to him until the 18th. Just want to know my options as am learning structure, function etc. and possible methods of dissolving stones until that time.
What is the indication for removing kidney?
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query, based on the facts that you have posted and going thrugh our previous discussion I would summarize the facts
You have bladder mass with involvement of lower end of Lt Ureter and Hydronephrosis on left side due to either involvement of lower end of lower end of ureter and presence of 7 mm stone in the mid portion of ureter .Attempt was made to fragment the stone but failed as Urologist was unable to pass endoscope up in to ureter and stent was placed .The biopsy of the bladder has been reported the mass in the bladder to be benign in nature .
Please note that removing the stone or crushing the stone is not important but it should be our aim to save the kidney .
I think you can discuss the issue with your Urologist covering the following points in discussion.
1)What are his plan as for as treatment of Bladder mass is concerned ?
2)If the tumor is not malignant and if he is planning simple procedure like resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) One can certainly attempt to replant ureter in bladder by surgery of (Uretero Neo Cystostomy)at other place so the This will help to maintain the continuity of ureter and kidney can be saved .Please do not hesitate to discuss this with your Urologist.
Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions ,I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.
