Brief Answer: Following answers to your queries.... Detailed Answer: Hi XXXXXXX I have gone through your queries carefully and would say as following: - " how effective is this in reducing the size of a enlarged prostate" - Proscar is the brand name for the generic finasteride. It is a drug that inhibits the enzyme that converts Testosterone to DHT in the prostate, leading to reduced size of prostate. Flomax is the brand name for the generic Tamsulosin, an alpha-adrenergic inhibitors. Consequently, it will cause relaxation of the muscles decreasing obstruction to the urine flow. - "how long does it usually take to reduce the size of the prostate"? - Usually, it will take 6 months to see real improvement. However, some of my patients have reported improvement within the 3 first months of starting therapy. - "if I need to get a biopsy what is the procedure and what is the safest way"? - Biopsy is not a common diagnostic procedure. It is recommended only in cases where lump is noticed in the prostate and/or in cases where PSA is highly elevated. The common procedure is by inserting a needle through the rectum wall, and a piece of prostate tissue is aspirated for biopsy. Usually, it is a safe procedure. The most common side effects reported include bleeding and infection. Hope it answered to your questions! Let me know if you need further assistance! Dr.Albana
