Question: Hi Doctor
Few months back i suffered from severe nasal congestion and head ache. ENT doctor told me that i have nasal septal deviation. I got septoplasty and FESS 2 months back. I suffered congestion even after that, so doctor gave me some sprays - otrivin (initially), now im using floresp and some tablets too like nukast (initially), largy-m(now) etc..when ever i stop taking tablet i feel im getting congestion again.

1) Is it advisible to use these tablets for a long time.? if not
2) What is the permanent solution for this congestion problem?

Brief Answer:
Congestion is due to allergy.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

The congestion that you are having seems to be due to allergy and the medicines you are taking are used to control the allergy.

These medicines can safely be taken and do not have many side effects. They are generally to be taken for a long time. Once the allergy is totally controlled, you doctor can try to taper them off and finally stop them.

There is no permanent cure to allergy. However it can be controlled by avoiding allergens like dust, smoke, extreme cold weather etc. Some deep breathing exercises through nose and a healthy life style also help

Hi Doctor

Thanks for the quick update.

The congestion i used to get is in patterns. I used to feel congestion when i sit down or sleep. While standing, running, gymming i dont feel much of congestion. This used to happen even when i sit my office which is completely air conditioned & dust free and also when im outside, in my home or in other warm place.

Not sure if this is of allergy type. As im on tablets, it going good. Im afraid what happens if i stop using tablets
if this is because of allergy, are there any tests to find out the substance, condition to which im allergic.

Regards
XXXX

Brief Answer:
it is due to better drainage of nasal secretions.

Detailed Answer:

Your feeling the congestion in some particular position or feeling relieved in others may be because in particular positions like standing or running may be because of better drainage of nasal secretions.

It definitely appears to be of allergic nature and the medicines you are using are for controlling allergy as I have already mentioned and that`s why you are feeling relieved.

Yes there are tests to find out allergy but I`m personally not in favour of them as you can be allergic to a number of things of common use in day to day life and it1s not possible to find out all the allergens. Over a period of time you will be able to identify the common substances that you are allergic to and you should avoid them.
