Posted on Thu, 16 Jun 2016
Question: I have a 6mm stone ..5 mm away from vesico ureteric junction... usg also suggested mild hydronephrosis..I am on tamsulosin 0.4mg from a week.. apart from a mild discomfort I feel no pain.. urine output is good..no fever or pedal edema or other complaints. I am also on cystone tabs how long can I take tamsulosin and now that I am passing good amount of urine... should I be concerned with hydronephrosis or can I continue and wait for medical expulsion (I jus finished my mbbs so feel free to explain with med terminology... I don't want to undergo invasive procedures) thanku sir

Brief Answer:
A 6mm calculus should flush out, with conservative treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXX and welcome to HCM.
As an Urologist,i can very well understand your concern.

Hi doc. Yes, you can very well continue with conservative medical approach.
The mild hydronephrosis is not an issue.
A 6mm calculus may, very well flush out any time.

You can stop the cystone tablets.
You should start a potassium magnesium citrate solution or tablets, twice daily.
Hope you've checked your blood calcium, phosphorus and uric acid level.
If uric acid level is high,it'll need treatment.

Drink atleast 12-15 glasses of fluids daily (3 litres).
That's very important. Avoid milk and dairy products, if calcium level is high.

After 1 month, repeat the scan,to confirm the stone's cleared.
Wish you well.
