Question: I had blood pressure of 150/90 sometimes higher (160/90) and have been prescribed telmisartan (tazloc 40) since 2012 around July-August. My BP now stays around 130/80 with the medicine (1 pill after breakfast). Should I continue with the medication? Are there risks with continuing?

Brief Answer:
Continue with the medication

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the query.

Yes, you need to continue with the medication as this will help in maintaining your blood pressure in normal range.

The long term complications of taking Telmisartan are:
1. Hypotension - this may lead to low blood pressure on long term use. For this you need to monitor your blood pressure regularly and if frequent low readings are observed then the dose might have to be reduced.

2. Hyperkalemia - High blood potassium levels. Regular blood monitoring is required on yearly basis. In case if increase in levels are observed, might need to change to different group of drugs for Blood pressure control.

3. Renal impairment - Regular checkup and consumption of plenty of water would avoid this complication.

4. Anemia

5. Back pain/Diarrhea.

Every drug has complication but the benefits are more than the side effects. And are observed in very few persons.

In case you are experiencing any symptoms please consult your doctor. You should also go for regular checkup with your doctor.

Hope this answers your query. If any further questions, will be happy to help.

Regards.
