Brief Answer:
Sperm can fertize within 72 hours

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

Life of a heathy normal sperm in woman's body is 72 hours; i.e. it is active for 72 hours during which time it can fertilize an egg or ovum if it meets it. The egg has a life of 24 hours. After deposition in the vagina, the sperms very actively swim through the uterus and tubes to fertilize the ovum.

The sperms are also present in the pre-ejaculatory secretions in sufficient numbers to fertilize the egg. This secretion is deposited in the vagina during sex unknowingly. Hence, withdrawal method is not a safe method of contraception.

Therefore, a period of about a week around the day of egg release (ovulation) is considered as Fertile Period.

Based on the life of sperms, the post coital emergency contraceptive pills (Plan B) have to be consumed within 72 hours of unprotected sex.
